Independent wrestling star Ganon Jones Jr. announced on social media on Thursday he will be stepping away from professional wrestling following the death of “The Butcher” Andy Williams after an indie show near Pittsburgh. Jones was one-half of the tag team, alongside Duke Davis, who faced The Butcher and his partner, The Blade, at the Enjoy Wrestling event.
Jones took to Instagram to issue the statement. He wrote that he always told himself he’d walk away from the business if either his body no longer allowed him to wrestle, or if he was no longer having fun.
“Saturday, September 5th at Enjoy Wrestling was one of the worst nights of my life,” Jones continued. “Not an hour has gone by since then that I haven’t thought about Andy and his family. Thinking about the match and everything that transpired afterward just keeps replaying in my mind.”
Jones wrote that his daughter was in attendance that night, having fun before the tragedy, and what transpired scared her “more than anything he could remember.” He said that he got a text from her that said, “I am not letting u do wrestling anymore.” He said the message unlocked a new reason for him to step away.
He wrote in his post that he hopes the step back isn’t forever, because he doesn’t entirely feel ready to leave yet, but he needs to be a dad first. Jones urged fans to keep supporting wrestling and “loving your people while they’re here.” He called Williams “one of the kindest souls” he has ever met.
After collapsing during the match on September 5, Williams was pronounced dead at a Pittsburgh hospital. He was 48 years old.
