The NXT Championship flood gates opened up to the entire “WWE NXT” roster on Tuesday, and naturally, everyone tried to fight their way to opportunity. It was EK Prosper who seized it in the end.
As Grayson Waller, the reigning NXT Champion, waited in the ring for his open challenge opponent, chaos ensued backstage and around the ring. Shoves were exchanged, punches were thrown, and Zilla Fatu and Cruz Montana even took turns yanking each other out of the ring. Still, Prosper found an opening to hop into the ring to officially answer the call for himself.
The rising “NXT” star burst into the match hot, connecting with a springboard missile dropkick before sending Waller to the outside with another one. A moonsault off the apron from Prosper followed, as did a Frog Splash for a near fall.
Later in the match, Waller gained control by dropping Prosper onto steel ring cables and steel steps. That momentum didn’t last long, however, as Prosper bounced back with a hurricanrana, a pair of clotheslines, and a superkick to leave the champion staggering. Waller’s face met the mat, courtesy of a DDT. His shoulders then stuck to it for a near fall off a Michinoku Driver.
Waller landed a near fall of his own shortly after off a stomp. When Prosper refused to quit, he then cleared the announce table with the intention of sending Prosper through. Instead, Prosper drove him through it with a springboard moonsault and earned another near fall off a subsequent leg lariat. The champion rebounded with a knee strike and a pair of rolling stunners, the latter of which finally kept Prosper down for the three count.
Mason Rook was initially set to challenge Waller for the NXT Title. Hours before the broadcast, however, “NXT” officials revealed that he’d be out of action for the foreseeable future. An open challenge for members of the “NXT” roster then emerged, with CM Punk and AJ Styles both turning it down.
