Perhaps the only thing more shocking than the 93 CMLL Aniversario expanding to a nine match card was the inclusion of AEW’s Jeff Jarrett, who will be making his Arena Mexico debut to take on Blue Panther. On its face, the match appears to be a special attraction by two wrestlers who were stars back in the 90s. But according to Dave Meltzer on the latest “Wrestling Observer Radio,” it may turn out to be the launching point for an extended Jeff Jarrett run in CMLL.
“What I can say, and I don’t know if this is going to transpire, but I do know for a fact that Jeff Jarrett is very interested in actually not doing a one and done, but actually…not being a regular, not going down every Friday, but being a semi-regular from AEW that’s going to go and work a program and build a match and things like that,” Meltzer said. “You know, similar to what Johnny TV did, except bigger. That’s his hope. It may not happen.”
Fans may recall that Johnny TV did have a short, but memorable run in CMLL earlier this year, wrestling under the name Johnny Consejo. He would wind up feuding with one-half of the CMLL World Tag Team Champions Angel de Oro, culminating in the two having a hair vs. hair match on February 27. TV lost the match and was promptly shaved bald.
While this is Jarrett’s first time in CMLL, he is not only familiar with lucha libre but has had similar runs to the one he’s hoping to have now in year’s past. The WWE Hall of Famer began working for CMLL’s rival AAA in 2004, and would go on to have several stints with the promotion between then and 2022, even winning the AAA Mega Championship on two occasions. During his last full-time run in 2018, Jarrett would develop a feud with lucha legend Dr. Wagner Jr., which built to a hair vs. hair match at Heroes Immortales XII in October, which Wagner won.
