Tony Khan has confirmed that AEW Women’s World Champion Mercedes Mone was originally scheduled to wrestle at this weekend’s All Out pay-per-view.
Mone has yet to defend the world title that she won at All In in London, England, owing to her broken nose, which happened in the aforementioned match against Willow Nightingale. Khan said in a pre-All Out media call that injuries are bound to happen in pro wrestling and believes that others will step up in Mone’s absence.
“Mercedes Mone was originally scheduled to wrestle on AEW All Out, and that’s the nature of wrestling. It’s a hard-hitting sport. There are injuries and, just like in all sports, you have to have a deep roster and be able to think on your feet and be flexible. And that’s what’s great about AEW. There’s so many great wrestlers in this company and, in this case, multiple former world champions looking to step up and fight each other to get in line to fight the champ,” he said.
Khan, though, allayed fears about the seriousness of Mone’s injury. He expects her to return to the ring next month and defend her championship at the WrestleDream pay-per-view on October 17 against the winner of the #1 contenders match between Nightingale and Thekla at All Out.
“And in Mercedes’ case, it’s not a long-term injury. It’s something where she’ll be back. I think she’ll be back next month and I’m almost certain she’ll be back next month. That’s the plan, is for Mercedes to return in October. That’s why we have this match on the pay-per-view to determine who will challenge for the world title at our next pay-per-view, WrestleDream,” Khan added.
He reiterated how Mone’s injury altered plans for All Out, explaining that AEW’s doctors didn’t clear her to wrestle at the show. Khan said that Mone is a fighting champion and will surely be back in the ring next month.
