The Los Angeles Clippers’ frontcourt depth took a significant hit on Thursday as the team announced that rookie center Yanic Konan Niederhauser will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot.

The injury occurred during the first half of Wednesday’s matchup against the Indiana Pacers. Niederhauser, a burgeoning defensive presence, came down awkwardly after contesting a shot at the rim. Following a series of evaluations by the team’s medical staff, the diagnosis confirmed the severity of the ligament damage, necessitating a surgical procedure that effectively ended his debut NBA campaign.

Selected with the 30th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, the Bern native had begun to carve out a consistent role in Tyronn Lue’s rotation. The Swiss big man’s journey to the professional stage was non-traditional, starting his professional career in Germany before transitioning to the NCAA, where he developed his game at Northern Illinois and Penn State between 2022 and 2025.

Through 41 appearances this season, Niederhauser averaged 4.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per contest. While his traditional box score numbers remained modest, his 66% field-goal efficiency and rim-protecting instincts provided a vital spark for the Clippers’ second unit, particularly following the roster shifts in early February.

The timing of the injury is a blow to a Clippers squad fighting for postseason relevance. Sitting at 30-31 in the 2025-26 Regular Season and holding the ninth seed in the Western Conference, Los Angeles is locked in a tight race for a Play-In tournament spot. Losing Niederhauser’s length and athleticism significantly limits Lue’s frontcourt options during the critical final stretch.
