WWE WrestleMania is known as ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All,’ but the massive PLE was arguably even bigger when The Undertaker put his undefeated streak on the line each and every year. Many fans were shocked at WrestleMania 30 when “The Streak” came to an end at the hands of Brock Lesnar, and according to JBL on “Something to Wrestle,” not even the commentators were aware of the finish. The veteran stated that his co-commentator Michael Cole was getting ready to proclaim that the “Streak continues” at the end of the match before being surprised by the outcome.
“Michael and I didn’t know the finish,” JBL said. He confirmed that the commentators would often be filled in on who was winning and losing, as it made it easier to know who to build up and who to knock down verbally. However, JBL also argued that often times when there are two big stars in a match, knowing the outcome isn’t necessary, and on that night, they were caught off by the outcome.
“If we’d have asked, they’d probably have told us, but we didn’t need to know,” he continued. “What a freaking moment! I remember going backstage, telling ‘Taker I loved him, what a great thing he did. It just kind of felt like the end of something. … I remember thinking, ‘God, that kind of sucks.'”
JBL then clarified that he did believe somebody should’ve broken the streak at some point, and there was no better option than Lesnar, but the commentator felt a twinge of sadness all the same.
