Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn has provided an analysis of CM Punk’s in-ring ability, explaining whether the legendary star is overrated in the squared circle.
Punk is regarded as one of, if not the best, wrestlers in the ring over the last two decades, with his in-ring prowess and later his work on the mic taking him to the top in WWE. Zayn, who is another wrestler with superb in-ring skills, recently discussed on “Busted Open” whether Punk is as good as many claim him to be.
“Phoney? Yeah. Overrated? I have to be honest, you know, I never got in the ring with him until earlier this year, and I can’t take it away from him, he’s great in the ring. He actually opened my eyes,” said the champ.
Zayn said he held the notion for a long time that he didn’t understand the hype around Punk, something many have said about him, too. But after wrestling him a few times this year, he begrudgingly praised the “Second City Saint’s” in-ring ability.
“Because for a long time, the hype around Punk was like, you know, and I can’t — you can say the same thing about me, because people have said it about me, they’re like, I don’t get this guy. And there were times that Punk, the levels he reached, I’m like, I don’t get how he reached these levels. Like, clearly there’s something about him. But I didn’t always get the hype,” said Zayn. “But after I got in the ring with him three or four times this year, like, you can’t take that away from him. And trust me, I would love to. I would love to sit here and bash him for the next 10, 15 minutes. But in the ring, I can’t take it away from him.”
Zayn has shared the ring with Punk on a few occasions, with the two facing each other just thrice in singles matches on WWE television, the first of which came last year on “WWE Raw.”
