The Ohio State football regular season is complete. The Buckeyes ended a perfect regular season, going 12-0 with a win over rival Michigan and ending a four-game losing streak to the Wolverines. But something else happened on Saturday that was a culmination of domination all season long.
The Ohio State defense joined an elite club when the clock struck zero in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon. So elite, only one other team in the modern football era has accomplished the feat. The Silver Bullets became just the second unit since the leather helmet era ended to hold every opponent to under 17 points in a game. The Buckeye defense joins the 1975 Florida Gators as the only other team on this short list.
The game has evolved significantly over the years, with offenses spreading the field through an increasing number of passing attempts. This has made scoring opportunities much higher while putting defenses in difficult situations to stop opposing offensive schemes. But the Buckeye defense has stood tall this year and done so in dominating fashion.
And before anyone says, “Well, Ohio State had a weak schedule,” keep this in mind. The 2011 Alabama team was close to accomplishing the feat, but gave up 21 points to Georgia Southern. It’s just not that easy to consistently keep opponents out of the end zone in today’s college game. What the defense has done this season is impressive no matter how you slice it.
The Buckeyes will look to continue their dominance as they head into postseason play, which begins Saturday in the Big Ten Championship game against Indiana. The Hoosiers have the No. 1 scoring offense in the country of all Power 4 teams with an average of 44.3 points per game.
Ohio State and Indiana will face off for conference supremacy next Saturday in Indianapolis.
