Roy Jones Jr believes the mental side of boxing has changed, arguing that elite fighters need a “kill or die” mindset to succeed inside the ring.
Reflecting on Xander Zayas’ stoppage loss to Jaron “Boots” Ennis, Jones said the biggest challenge for fighters isn’t always physical ability, but maintaining the mentality needed to compete at the highest level.
“This is what people don’t understand about prizefighting,” Jones said on All The Smoke Fight. “If you’re going to be a real prizefighter, you got to be willing to kill or die.”
“You don’t want to kill, and you don’t want to die, but that’s what’s got to be the mindset.”
Jones compared that mentality to soldiers in combat, explaining why he believes many military veterans appreciate boxing.
“That’s why a lot of times the army veterans watch boxing,” Jones said. “They know they got to either kill or they’re going to die. That’s almost what boxing is. It ain’t got the guns, but these gloves are the same thing. You’re out there to kill or die.”
The former four-division world champion also said every fighter needs people around them willing to protect them from themselves.
“You got to have a team that understands how to save you from yourself,” Jones said. “Me, I’m going to get myself killed because that’s just who I am. Somebody got to save me from me because I’m not going to stop.”
Jones believes that mentality is what separated many of boxing’s great champions, but it also explains why fighters can struggle after suffering a damaging defeat.
He said Zayas still has the talent to become a world champion again but first needs to recover mentally from his loss to Ennis. In Jones’ view, restoring that mindset is every bit as important as improving any technical flaws before returning to title contention.
