“I’m about that action, man,” said Torrez to Ring Magazine about a possible fight with Itauma. “I think it’s really cool what he’s doing in the UK. I think he’s an incredible fighter.”
The Olympic silver medalist said a matchup between the two could produce one of the more entertaining heavyweight fights in the sport because of their styles and willingness to engage.
“If we were able to collide and make something happen, it’d be fireworks, man,” said Torrez. “I don’t run from smoke. I want the best fights.”
Torrez also pointed out that he believes Itauma has not yet faced an opponent with similar speed and movement.
“He hasn’t really fought anybody that kind of has that speed and quickness as well,” said Torrez. “I would like to be able to just throw my hat in there and see how it goes.”
The 25-year-old added that his conditioning, amateur background, and style give him confidence against any heavyweight prospect currently coming through the division.
“With my feints, my conditioning, and my style, it would make it hard for anybody,” said Torrez.
Torrez revealed he has never even met Itauma despite already being linked to him repeatedly by fans online.
“I’ve never talked to him. I’ve never seen him in person,” said Torrez. “But I heard he’s a pretty standup guy.”
Torrez faces Sanchez later this month in what could move him closer to a heavyweight title eliminator, while Itauma continues building momentum in the UK as one of boxing’s fastest-rising young heavyweights.
