Richard Torrez Jr. says he expects his pressure and conditioning to become a major factor against Frank Sanchez on Saturday night in Egypt. Torrez believes Sanchez is dangerous early, especially with his jab and counter right hand, but feels the fight becomes harder for the Cuban contender as the rounds go on.
“I think Frank does a great job of lulling you. He’ll throw that one jab, that one jab, and then he’ll come with a really quick one with a powerful two. That’s something I gotta keep my eye on,” said Torrea Jr. to talkSport Boxing.
“I think the difference between me and Frank is Frank has the opportunity for one shot, and if not then it’s gonna be a scary fight for him. For me, it’s that pressure. It’s that tenacity and as those rounds go on is where I get my money in.”
Torrez also said the fight could give him a chance to show more of his boxing skills rather than only being viewed as an aggressive pressure fighter. The unbeaten heavyweight added that he sees himself as part of the new generation carrying the division forward for American heavyweights.
“I think Frank has a great chance for me to showcase my boxing ability more because I have to bring it out. I’m really excited for this fight to showcase that I can actually box as well,” said Torrez Jr.
“The heavyweight division is so volatile right now. You never know who’s going to be on top. It’s changing every month it feels like. I really want to put us out there for the USA and say we’re here to stay as well.”
Later in the interview, Torrez praised Oleksandr Usyk as a role model for smaller heavyweights and welcomed the idea of a future fight against Moses Itauma.
“Oleksandr Usyk has definitely been a role model to me as well. He really has knocked on the door for a lot of these smaller heavyweights,” said Torrez Jr.
“I think [Moses Itauma] is a great fighter. He’s fast, he’s quick, he has incredible capability, but again, I think that he hasn’t fought a fighter like me.”
Torrez closed by making it clear how highly he rates himself heading into the biggest fight of his professional career.
“I’m extremely confident in my ability. I wouldn’t be in this game anymore if I didn’t think I was the best. I believe I’m the best in boxing, and I’m here to prove it,” said Torrez Jr.
