Lara, 31-3-2 (24 KOs), of Mexico City, collected his fifth consecutive victory. Ornelas, 29-6 (16 KOs), of Rosarito, Baja California, gave him an early scare before being stopped.
During the final minute of the opening round, Ornelas dropped Lara with a left to the chin. Referee Manuel Rivera administered an eight-count, but Lara recovered and returned the favor, flooring Ornelas with a right to the chin before the bell.
Ornelas beat the count but also suffered a bad cut over his left eye. Lara resumed his attack in the second round, and the contest was halted after just 42 seconds.
Jorge Mata Stops Ronaldo Ruelas
In the scheduled 10-round co-feature, Guadalajara’s Jorge Mata, 23-3-2 (15 KOs), also recovered from an opening-round knockdown to stop fellow Guadalajara fighter Ronaldo Ruelas, 18-4-2 (13 KOs), at 2:56 of the third.
Ruelas dropped Mata with a left hook to the chin in the first round. Mata took an eight-count from referee Augustine Ayala and continued.
By the third, Mata had turned the fight around, dropping Ruelas for the count to complete his comeback.
Santiago Barajas Upsets Joshua Franco
Santiago Barajas, 10-1-2 (4 KOs), defeated former WBA super flyweight champion Joshua “El Professor” Franco, 18-3-3 (8 KOs), by split decision over eight rounds.
Franco, of San Antonio, Texas, outlanded Barajas through much of the opening round. With just over a minute remaining in the second, he dropped Barajas with a three-punch combination that began and ended with a left hook to the chin. Referee Manuel Rivera administered an eight-count.
Barajas recovered and stayed in the contest. Franco had the better of the exchanges in an action-filled fourth round, while the seventh developed into a war. Both maintained a high pace through the eighth and final round, with Barajas taking the decision despite the knockdown.
Roberto Carbajal Scores First-Round Knockout
Guadalajara’s Roberto Carbajal, 3-0 (1 KO), knocked out Lenin Ulises, 5-2-1 (1 KO), of Mexico City, at 0:42 of the opening round in their scheduled six-round bout.
A left hook to the chin sent Ulises to the canvas, where referee Augustine Ayala counted him out.
Hector Carbajal Stops Aldo Aran
Hector “El Gato” Carbajal, 3-0 (3 KOs), of Guadalajara, stopped Aldo Aran, 3-2 (1 KO), of Saltillo, Coahuila, at 2:38 of the third round.
Carbajal dropped Aran with a combination to the chin in the third. Aran rose and received an eight-count from referee Augustine Ayala, but Carbajal followed with another flurry. With Aran unable to defend himself, Ayala stepped in to end the fight.
