Mac McClung had no shortage of options and explained why he ended up chosing FIATC Girona. Over the last two years, the American guard received more than 10 offers from EuroLeague clubs, but when it came time to make a decision, money was not what drove him.
“I told my agent, ‘I don’t want to chase the most money. It doesn’t matter,’” McClung said to Andreu Coll.
Instead, McClung and his agent decided to follow their instincts and look for a destination that felt right on a personal level.
“Over the last two years, I had over 10 EuroLeague offers. My agent and I agreed on following our hearts,” he explained.
That feeling became clear when McClung spoke with Moncho Fernández, the general manager Fernando San Emeterio and Marc Gasol. The conversations took place on the same day, and they quickly gave him a sense that he had found the right place. “When I talked to Moncho Fernández, the general manager, and Marc Gasol, all in the same day, I think this feels like home,” McClung said.
For McClung, the decision was never about the biggest salary or the size of the arena. Those factors were secondary to finding an environment where he could feel comfortable, connected and settled. “It was never about a certain amount of money or how big the arena is,” he said. “I just wanted to go somewhere that kind of felt like home away from home.”
