Lester Martinez was too strong, too busy, and too consistent for Immanuwel Aleem, and by the end of 12 rounds in San Bernardino, he had done more than win a fight. He left with the vacant WBC interim super middleweight title and a place in Guatemalan boxing history.

Martinez took a unanimous decision over Aleem on Saturday night at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, California, winning on scores of 120-108, 118-110, and 119-109. The bout was shown live on ProBox TV and gave Martinez the first world-level belt of his career, along with recognition as the first Guatemalan fighter to win a world title at the interim level.

The scores told the story of a fight that Martinez controlled for long stretches. He pushed the pace early, kept Aleem on the back foot and piled up rounds through pressure, steady punching and a willingness to work every minute. Aleem had a few spells where he made things awkward and found small pockets of success, but he could not keep Martinez off him long enough to turn the fight into something close.

Martinez, who entered the night at 19-0-1 with 16 knockouts, fought like the younger and fresher man from the opening rounds. He stayed on top of Aleem, let his hands go, and forced the veteran into a fight that was hard to manage over 12 rounds. Aleem had the experience to survive rough patches and the toughness to reach the final bell, but surviving was not enough against a fighter who kept building a lead.

Aleem came in at 22-3-3 with 14 knockouts and tried to use his experience to disrupt Martinez’s flow, but the pressure never really let up. There were no knockdowns and no late drama that changed the direction of the fight. Martinez simply kept stacking rounds and making Aleem work at a pace that favored him.

That was an important part of the result. Martinez did not need one big moment to bail him out. He won by doing the hard, boring things over and over again, and that tends to travel better at world level than highlight-reel bursts. After his draw against Christian Mbilli in 2025, this was the kind of result he needed. It was clear, wide, and left little room for argument.

At 168 pounds, Martinez now moves forward as the WBC interim titleholder and a live name in a division that already has several major players. Saturday’s win may not go down as his sharpest performance, but it was still a serious piece of work against a seasoned opponent who was brought in to test him. Martinez passed that test cleanly, and he looks like a fighter who is getting closer to the nights that count most.
