Lee Westwood, one of the most successful English golfers of his generation, is to make his debut on Europe’s senior professional circuit at the Staysure English Legends, which is taking place in Kent next week.
The 53-year-old form Worksop, who has been plying his trade on the LIV Golf League since 2022, will make his first appearance on the Staysure Legends Tour at Chart Hills Golf Club from 28-30 August, bringing more than three decades of experience at the very highest level of the game to a field packed with Major champions, Ryder Cup players and Tour winners.
Few players have been as consistent a presence at the top of European golf as Westwood. A winner of 44 professional titles around the world, the Englishman has won across four continents, reached no.1 in the world ranking and built one of the most distinguished Ryder Cup records in the history of the competition.
Westwood said: “I’m looking forward to playing the Staysure English Legends Tournament at Chart Hills and making my first appearance on the Staysure Legends Tour. There’ll be a lot of familiar faces there, guys I’ve played with and against for a long time, so it should be a good week.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing in front of a home crowd. The support you get in England is always great, so it’ll be nice to get out there at Chart Hills and hopefully give everyone something to enjoy.”
Ryan Howsam, chairman of the Staysure Legends Tour, said: “To welcome a player of Lee’s calibre to the Staysure Legends Tour is hugely exciting. He has been one of the defining figures in European golf for more than three decades and his record at the very highest level speaks for itself. From reaching world no.1 and winning around the world to representing Europe in 11 Ryder Cups,
“Lee has achieved an enormous amount in the game. To have him make his debut at the Staysure English Legends makes it even more special. It gives fans the opportunity to see one of England’s greatest players begin this next chapter on home soil, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Chart Hills.”
Westwood joins line up of Major stars and Tour winners
Westwood’s arrival adds further strength to a Staysure English Legends field bringing together some of the most recognisable names from European golf.
Among those heading to Chart Hills is 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell, alongside former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley and defending champion Steve Webster, who won 12 months ago at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire.
The week will begin with a special match play contest on August 27, when Campbell partners former Premier League footballer and TV personality Jimmy Bullard against McGinley and leading golf content creator Peter Finch. The fourball will tee off at 8am ahead of the tournament Pro-Am, with fans invited to attend free of charge and follow the action around Chart Hills.
Fans are free to attend
Once tournament play begins on Friday, spectators will be able to get close to the action across three days, walking the fairways alongside Westwood and some of the biggest names in the field.
Away from the action on the course, spectators can also visit the Destination Pavilion in the Tournament Village, where they can discover some of the Staysure Legends Tour’s leading golf destinations and enter competitions to win free golf holidays.
Tickets to attend the Staysure English Legends are free for spectators, but pre-registration is required. For more details, click here.
