Jai Opetaia has set an ambitious target for the remainder of 2026, with the Australian believing his long-standing dream of becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion could soon become a reality.
The Ring champion discussed the subject during a recent fan event in Washington, D.C., where he indicated that conversations with his team had produced a timeline for pursuing undisputed status.
Asked about his goals during a recent fan event in Washington, D.C., Opetaia made it clear that collecting every major title remains at the top of his agenda.
“I actually had a good sit-down with some of the team today,” Opetaia said to the media. “We’re hoping to make that dream possible by the end of the year. We’ve got that perfect plan, but early next year would be good, but undisputed is what I want.”
“Any of these other belt holders want it, but I’m telling that it’s an easy fight to make. All they got to do is reach out.”
Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) has established himself as one of the premier fighters at cruiserweight and has frequently expressed frustration over his inability to secure the biggest fights available in the division.
One of the most significant bouts on the table remains a showdown with David Benavidez. Benavidez has previously described Opetaia as “a great fighter” and said the matchup is “definitely a fight I want,” while also questioning Opetaia’s move to Zuffa Boxing and stating that he has no interest in competing for a Zuffa title. Those promotional differences have complicated negotiations for a fight many regard as the biggest available at cruiserweight.
Opetaia’s pursuit of undisputed status could involve bouts against Gilberto Ramirez and the eventual resolution of the WBC title picture, while a meeting with Benavidez remains one of the division’s most anticipated possibilities.
