Gary Antuanne Russell is in early talks for the second defense of his WBA light welterweight title, with Oscar Duarte emerging as the leading candidate.
Russell retained the title in his first defense on February 21, outboxing Andy Hiraoka over 12 rounds in Las Vegas. That victory followed his unanimous decision over Jose Valenzuela in March 2025 to capture the WBA belt. The Washington, D.C., native now aims to further establish himself at the top of the division.
Duarte earned his title opportunity with a 12-round majority decision over Kenneth Sims Jr. in August 2025 in a WBA light welterweight eliminator. Earlier this year, he was scheduled to challenge then IBF champion Richardson Hitchins on February 21, but the fight was canceled after Hitchins withdrew on the day of the event because of illness.
The Mexican contender now appears close to receiving another world title opportunity. The Ring’s Mike Coppinger reported. No date or venue has been announced while discussions continue.
The matchup pairs two aggressive styles. Russell throws fast combinations at a high pace, while Duarte looks to wear opponents down with heavy punching. Neither boxer spends much time moving backward, giving the bout the ingredients for an entertaining contest at 140 pounds.
A victory for Russell would give him a second successful title defense while reinforcing his standing among the division’s leading champions. Duarte, meanwhile, has the opportunity to capitalize on the title shot he earned through his victory over Kenneth Sims Jr. in the WBA eliminator.
