FORMER Premier League striker Jonathan Benteke has swapped scoring for sugary snacks … by opening a DOUGHNUT SHOP.

The Belgian made one top-flight appearance for Crystal Palace, coming on as a sub for his brother Christian – who also played for Liverpool and Aston Villa – in 2016.

Benteke also played for Oldham Athletic in Leagues One and Two, scoring twice in 13 Latics appearances.

The 30-year-old’s career took him from Belgium to Cyprus, Germany, the US, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan before retiring last year.

He has now bought a franchise from Belgian firm Dreams Donuts to open the company’s first shop in Luxembourg.

Benteke said: “I took up football as I saw my older brother playing, and I turned professional.

“But I didn’t get any interesting offers to continue in football. I have been investing in property, and I wanted to become a businessman.

“I didn’t choose Dreams Donuts by chance. I wanted to get into an emerging project with the potential to grow rather than an established brand.

“I have lived in Luxembourg since my spell playing for Petange. I love the place, and could tell the local youngsters wanted something a bit different.

“It’s a new career for me. I’ve created jobs, it’s a stable career, and I am happy.

“Besides doughnuts we offer bubble teas, smoothies, tea, coffee, hot dogs and ice cream.

“I hope to continue investing alongside my brother. It’s always important to work with your family.

“I was with Crystal Palace’s Under-23 side, but made the senior squad and was able to come on as a sub for Christian.

“I’ve had some beautiful moments in football, especially that one.

“But I got injured soon afterwards, and couldn’t play any more that season.”

Elder brother Christian, 35, played for Aston Villa and Liverpool before joining Palace in 2016.

The Belgium international has just joined Abu Dhabi club Al Wahda from American side DC United.
