Theo Papaloukas sat down with Eurohoops for the seventh edition of Final Four Stories by Stoiximan, reflecting on the turning point of his career, winning the EuroLeague championship with CSKA Moscow as the Most Valuable Player of the Final Four in 2006.

He noted that the arrival of head coach Ettore Messina was the catalyst for a fundamental shift in the team’s DNA. “The team was different from previous years because Messina’s arrival changed our mentality and philosophy,” he explained. “I think that generally, the CSKA of that year and previous years played very strong defense and usually finished games in the fourth quarter because others couldn’t withstand the physical game we played. And we also had the quality.”

However, the legendary guard revealed a previously hidden struggle regarding his physical condition leading up to that historic weekend in Prague. “I suffered a case of lumbago,” he recalled a setback during the last team practice before the trip to Czechia’s capital. “I fell, and it took me half an hour to leave.”

“We brought in a chiropractor. I essentially went to that Final Four without training. During the morning practice, I just went in and dribbled for as long as the journalists were inside. Afterward, I don’t remember if I had an injection or if I took painkillers and pills to help me play, but you know, maybe it was also from the tension. Often, your body reacts. But I remember landing, and it was as if the ground had disappeared from under my feet,” added Papaloukas.

Beyond the physical toll, he reminisced about the unique chemistry shared by players in an era before the digital world changed team dynamics.

“We had special and good relationships with all the players, and I think that lasts. It’s important to take into account that it was a time when technology wasn’t as widespread as it is now. You didn’t have contact with your friends or your homeland as you do now, so by necessity, and I think it was much more useful, you created much better relationships with your teammates,” he said.

Papaloukas eventually added a second EuroLeague title with the Moscow club in 2008.
