Bella Mir’s mother has been under fire since her reactions on social media following her daughter’s loss on the Contender Series this week, but is offering an explanation, and an apology to Alex Apodaca.
Mir was on the wrong end of the biggest upset in DWCS history, losing a clear-cut decision to Apodaca in the main event of Tuesday’s card. Following the loss, Jennifer Mir was seen on several social media posts ripping Apodaca, including saying Apodaca “lucked out,” that the “judges were obviously” in her favor, commenting on her black eye “from my daughter f*cking you up,” and more. Jennifer’s reaction received a ton of backlash from the MMA community.
On Thursday, Jennifer released a social media post explaining where she was coming from and offering an apology to Apodaca.
“I want to address the comments I made after the fight. But first I want to give you all a very deserved explanation,” Mir stated. “After the fight I went onto Bella’s comments and saw comments telling my daughter to die and kill herself. I reacted purely as an emotional and protective mother after seeing my daughter go through a hard loss and I let alcohol and adrenaline get the better of me.
“However, that is ZERO excuse. I want to sincerely apologize to Alex Apodaca, her team, the judges, and the fans. Alex fought a brilliant fight and earned that win fair and square and deserves nothing but respect. My out-of-line comments were entirely my own and do not reflect Bella, her team, or the values she trains by.
“I’m stepping back from social media to let Bella focus on her recovery and I ask everyone to direct any frustration toward me and not my daughter.”
Bella suffered her first ever MMA loss as a -6000 favorite on some books, and reacted to some of the harsh criticism from fans in her first statement following the defeat, promising that “it takes way more than hate and one single loss in my MMA career to break me.”
