Bayern Munich has officially announced the signing of Johannes Thiemann on a two-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend the deal for the 2028-29 season.
The 32-year-old German international returns to Europe after spending the past two seasons with Japan’s Gunma Crane Thunders. A world champion, European champion and one of Germany’s most experienced players with 110 national team appearances, Thiemann is also set for a EuroLeague comeback after previously making 127 appearances in the competition.
“After two years in Asia and away from home, I’m really looking forward to returning to Germany and joining FC Bayern,” Thiemann said. “I’m happy to see so many familiar faces from the national team again in Munich and to compete with the guys at the highest European level.”
Standing 2.06 meters tall, Thiemann can play both power forward and center. Before moving to Japan in 2024, he spent six seasons with ALBA Berlin, winning three German championships, earning the 2022 Finals MVP award and eventually becoming team captain.
Bayern CEO Adrian Sarmiento welcomed the addition, emphasizing both Thiemann’s experience and leadership.
“We are very proud and happy that Johannes Thiemann is continuing his career with Bayern. Everyone in German basketball knows and appreciates his character and physical style of play. He is an ideal addition to our team both as a player and as a person,” Sarmiento said.
Thiemann averaged 11.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and shot 44.3 percent from three-point range in Japan last season. He is expected to rejoin the German national team in July for the upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
