The newly-returned Kevin Owens is set to go one-on-one with Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk for the gold on Friday’s edition of “WWE SmackDown,” live from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and he’s currently a betting favorite on at least one website to win the title. Win or lose, however, a new report indicates it’s unlikely the feud continues long after Friday night.
According to Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline, whatever happens in the main event of “SmackDown,” it’s “unlikely” to result in a lengthy feud between Punk and Owens, despite the pair’s real-life heat and history they brought up in their face-to-face segment last week. Alvarez noted that the recent plan was for the match to be a one-and-done.
Alvarez also noted that despite Owens being the betting favorite, technically, a victory for “The Prize Fighter” could mean via disqualification or count out. Punk would still have the champion’s advantage, and retain the title in those scenarios.
Owens won the opportunity to challenge “The Voice of the Voiceless” when he was added to a match, which ended up being a four-way, on night two of WWE SummerSlam. He bested GUNTHER, Sami Zayn, and Finn Balor following his shocking return. Following his initial confrontation with Punk on the blue brand, Owens revealed he’d be calling his shot on the episode of “SmackDown” in Toronto.
In an interview, Owens, a native of Montreal, revealed that he chose the location due to its significance surrounding his neck injury, as he thought he may have had his final match in the city at Elimination Chamber 2025. He also said that Toronto is easier for his family, including his mother, who has battled illness in recent years, to drive to.
