WWE is set to host its annual Crown Jewel premium live event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 7. Conflict in the Middle East is ongoing, however, and the kingdom’s capital city has been reportedly targeted in recent days, according to Reuters.
WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select offered an update as to what’s going on internally in WWE in the weeks leading up to the event. The outlet reported that several people in the company who regularly travel to Saudi Arabia events have been asking whether there will be any changes, or a possibly rescheduling, of Crown Jewel.
The outlet reported that the word backstage, as well as within WWE headquarters, is one of “large concern.” According to WrestleVotes, WWE has yet to acknowledge the situation internally. The company has also not issued a statement publicly, with six weeks to go until Crown Jewel’s scheduled date.
Travel could be a concern, but as of this writing, the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh is currently open and operational, as airspace in the region remains open. The U.S. Department of State has issued a level three travel advisory for the majority of Saudi Arabia, meaning travel to the area should be reconsidered. A level four “Do Not Travel” advisory is in effect at the Yemen border, due to the threat of terrorism, according to the state department’s website.
Those connected with the company, such as WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield, have offered their opinions in recent days. Layfield said that if it’s deemed unsafe, WWE won’t travel to Saudi Arabia and put the lives of its performers at risk.
