Sami Zayn has reached the mountain top of WWE once again after he shockingly dethroned CM Punk as Undisputed WWE Champion on September 11. Whether that will remain the case by the time WrestleMania 43 rolls around, though, was recently up for debate.
On the latest episode of “Grilling JR,” WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross shared his mixed reaction to Zayn’s second world title win.
“Nobody can deny the fact he’s a hell of a worker, but is he the guy you put in your main event at WrestleMania and feel good about it? I ain’t so sure about that,” Ross said. “I don’t know if he has enough mass appeal, or I guess you’d say in the old parlay, I’m not sure he’s over as much as he needs to be to be your number one guy. And no matter what you say, in that company, the number one guy is the WWE Champion. That ain’t gonna change.”
Ross praised Zayn’s in-ring work, describing him as very “entertaining” and “skilled.” Given that WWE hasn’t consistently put him in a position to even possibly win over the fanbase, though, Ross isn’t confident that he’d carry the Undisputed WWE Championship into the main event of WWE’s biggest yearly show. The 2027 iteration of WrestleMania will take WWE to Saudi Arabia, with another world title clash between Roman Reigns and Oba Femi tentatively circled as one of the main events.
Zayn previously headlined night one of WrestleMania 39 alongside Kevin Owens. In that instance, they vied for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships.
