Rafael Espinoza Trapped Beneath Boxing’s Bigger Names

Espinoza is trapped by his own difficulty. At 6’1″, he brings extreme height, nonstop volume, and dangerous uppercuts from distances that make no textbook sense. Angelo Leo and Brandon Figueroa would assume enormous physical risk without Espinoza bringing the commercial leverage usually attached to such a unification.

That leaves promoters using him as an expensive undercard weapon. He supplies action, strengthens major events, and keeps beating challengers, yet he is rarely treated like the attraction.

Joining Eddy Reynoso may help change that. The move connects Espinoza with Canelo’s inner circle and places him closer to the major Saudi cards where money can remove some of the usual promotional resistance. It may prove more valuable commercially than technically. Reynoso must be careful with the boxing side. Espinoza’s greatest asset is chaos. He fights tall at close range, throws in extended combinations and overwhelms opponents before they can settle into a rhythm.

Turning him into an orderly outside boxer would remove the quality that makes him miserable to face. There is also a limit to how long Espinoza can continue making 126 pounds. His Parra defense comes nearly a year after he retired Arnold Khegai, and draining a 6’1″ body becomes tougher with age and inactivity.

If the unifications keep getting delayed, Espinoza may reach 130 before receiving his defining featherweight fight. Boxing will then have wasted another champion because everyone understood the risk and nobody wanted to pay for it.
