Last night on the first “WWE Raw” in Mexico City in 15 years, Chad Gable defended the Intercontinental Championship against Dragon Lee in what was one of the best matches the red brand has produced this year. Coming into the show, Gable promised to deliver in the ring in order to thank the Mexican audience for supporting him as the Original El Grande Americano in his Mask vs. Mask match against El Grande Americano at AAA Noche de Los Grandes last May. In defeat, Gable was forced to take off his mask, and though he entered the match as a heel, the Mexican faithful praised the 40-year-old for his work as the character, which eventually kickstarted his journey to becoming Intercontinental Champion.
Two of Gable’s best matches this year have now been held in Mexico, and during an interview on Tuesday, he shared that he’s taken the time to learn about the country’s culture and claimed their fans are the most welcoming supporters he’s ever encountered.
“I didn’t know exactly everything about the Mexican culture when I started down here but I learned a lot on my way and I learned that you guys are some of the most forgiving and embracing people that I’ve ever met in my entire life … I was out walking around in the park and stuff and I met so many people there. Fans of Lucha Libre and wrestling in general and they were just so complimentary and thanking me for coming back and being here, and the pleasure’s mine, and it’s unbelievable. So you guys, you’re the best in the world, man. Best fans in the world.”

Although Gable didn’t share the screen with him, El Grande Americano returned to “Raw” last night as the new AAA Mega Champion and teamed with Stephanie Vaquer to defeat Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan.
