WWE legend Kevin Nash has lambasted those who have criticized Avery Styles, the son of AJ Styles, following his recent appearance in the indies.
Avery was called out for not helping out behind the scenes at a GCW show, with many veterans and wrestlers weighing in on the situation. Nash, on his “Kliq This” show, said that AJ Styles has already paid his son’s dues in the pro wrestling business for what he’s done. He also stated that if he were in AJ’s position, he would’ve pushed for Avery to begin his career at “WWE NXT.”
“I think AJ paid enough dues to where his son’s piggy bank is full. AJ’s not going to sign long term with Game Changer Wrestling. He’s starting there. So, if he was at NXT getting a push right out of the shoot — which if he was my kid, he would — he’s paying his dues. He’s some place that during the night somebody’s going to grab a fluorescent fu**ing light tube and have some death match,” said Nash. “He’s paying his dues on the canvas. That’s where you pay your dues, man.”
Nash doesn’t have a bad thing to say about GCW, having been part of one of their shows and stating that it’s one of his favorite promotions. But GCW won’t be a part of Avery Styles’ future, as he was announced at TNA’s Lockdown pay-per-view as the newest member of the promotion.
Nash says setting up rings needs experience
Kevin Nash hit out at Arik Cannon, saying it isn’t smart of him to go up against AJ Styles, considering the important position Styles holds in WWE.
“Like, number one, Arik Cannon, they just retired AJ [Styles] and he’s got a job with fu**ing NXT so, I don’t know if you fu**ing know how this whole business works, but man, there’s only so many bridges and if you burn three of the six and you haven’t fu**ing been anywhere for 10 fu**ing years, there’s a reason you’re setting up the ring,” began Nash.
The Hall of Famer said that asking a rookie to set up a wrestling ring may not be a wise decision, considering the risks that come with wrestling, arguing that if he made a mistake and a wrestler suffered an injury, the fault would lie with him. He cited how veteran WWE referee Charles Robinson still sets up rings because of how important it is that it’s done right.
“There are people in this business that have done [that] and the WWE referees are renowned for this. And to this day, I’m almost sure that [Charles] Robinson still helps put up and take down the ring. There’s always going to be a Charles, and there’s always going to be eight or nine or 10 guys that are going to [do it]. Like, it’s so important for that ring to be put together properly, for those ropes to be put together properly. It’s not a chore,” he said.
Many in the business have jumped to the defense of the Styles family, including WWE’s Cody Rhodes, who echoed Nash’s thoughts by saying that Avery has paid his dues through the sacrifices his father made in the business.
