This past May at Backlash, “The John Cena Classic” was officially announced, and a new report has revealed when the tournament could be taking place.
According to False Finish, WWE is considering Saturday, December 12 as the date for “The John Cena Classic,” a tournament which will showcase “WWE NXT” stars competing against main roster talent. Additionally, regardless of the results in the ring, the fans will get to choose who walks away as champion by the end of the tournament. The idea for the competition was inspired by Cena himself, who also had the idea to fill the undercard of his farewell show at Saturday Night’s Main Event with “WWE NXT” stars. Talent such as Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans and Sol Ruca all wrestled on the show and have become regularly featured stars on WWE’s weekly programming ever since.
So far, very few details are known about the structure of the tournament or how many competitors will be involved, with the entire concept said to be a “work in progress.” “The John Cena Classic” has reportedly been an idea in WWE for 15 years, and despite the 17-time world champion admitting that there’s still plenty of uncertainty about the tournament, he’s determined to put his full effort into delivering a good product. Although, a venue or city has yet to be named for the event, Netflix is reportedly heavily interested in hosting the tournament on its streaming platform. Cena also stated that he believes that audience participation is key in today’s industry, but wants to avoid the fan vote of the tournament being sabotaged or hijacked.
