Skye Nicolson will become the first boxer to compete under the Most Valuable Promotions-Matchroom initiative when she faces Miyo Yoshida in a WBC super bantamweight bout on August 29 in Birmingham, England.
Nicolson’s appearance marks the debut of the joint effort between Jake Paul’s MVP and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom. Company officials say the project is intended to create more avenues for elite competitors. They also plan to increase commercial support through larger events.
“My goal has always been to test myself against the very best. I truly believe this move puts me in the best possible position to do exactly that. I’m excited for what’s ahead.
“Women’s boxing is entering a new era, and I want to be right at the centre of it. This partnership with MVP and Matchroom gives me the opportunity to chase legacy, compete in the biggest fights out there, and help continue pushing women’s boxing forward.”
Nicolson was elevated to full WBC champion at 122 pounds earlier this year after Ellie Scotney vacated the division’s top prize. The 30-year-old previously held the organization’s featherweight crown. A victory over Yoshida would strengthen her standing in a second weight class.
Japan’s Miyo Yoshida brings extensive experience into the contest. The former IBF bantamweight ruler now trains at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn after relocating to the United States. Back-to-back victories since making the move earned her another shot at a world title.
Nicolson identified unification as the next objective of her career. Defeating Yoshida would bring those matchups within reach.
