Confirming a leak from June and recent rumors, ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Victor Wembanyama will grace the cover of NBA 2K27.
The official announcement is expected later Wednesday. However, this update puts an end to weeks of intense speculation within the gaming and basketball communities, tracking back to an accidental early publication on the official 2K Newsroom website that was quickly deleted but preserved via fan screenshots. By securing the standard edition cover spot, the 22-year-old French phenom solidifies his status as the premier face of the league’s next generation.
The selection caps off a historic calendar year for the San Antonio Spurs center, who recently guided his franchise to an unexpected Finals appearance in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, following a monumental third-year performance. His rapid ascent is mirrored in his video game progression, where his digital counterpart is expected to reach elite status near the top of the virtual hierarchy. Wemby also becomes the first Spurs player to earn the solo standard cover distinction and joins a select group of international stars to represent the global gaming franchise.

Paving the way for the Le Chesnay native, Greece’s Giannis Antetokounmpo appeared on the NBA 2K19 cover, followed by Slovenia’s Luka Doncic for NBA 2K22. Both European standouts have since moved on from the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks to the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively. Wembanyama’s inclusion marks the third time a European-born player has headlined the standard edition.
The game is scheduled to launch globally on September 4, with premium editions offering early access starting August 28.
