The San Antonio Spurs are heading back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 following an emotional Game 7 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. While this marks the franchise’s first championship series appearance without Gregg Popovich leading the bench, the team continues to rely heavily on the Hall of Famer as a vital championship resource.
Immediately after the team landed back in San Antonio, French superstar Victor Wembanyama made it a priority to seek out the legendary head coach. “I saw Pop right away when we landed,” said the 22-year-old center during a Tuesday press conference. “The emotion was really something I haven’t felt in a while, I don’t even know since when. Coming back down from this is a challenge, and it’s not done yet. We still need to really come back down to Earth and realize we haven’t done the hardest yet.”
To help decompress from the mental and emotional toll of the grueling seven-game series of the Western Conference Finals, Wemby treated his teammates to a private screening of the movie ‘Obsession’, a gesture later confirmed by ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.

Managing those emotions is a lesson the 77-year-old Popovich likely emphasized during his private airport conversation with Wembanyama, though the Frenchman opted to keep the specific details of their discussion confidential.
Popovich’s coaching career effectively came to an end after he suffered a stroke in 2024, but the five-time NBA champion remains deeply embedded in the culture of the franchise. Serving as president and jokingly adopting the nickname ‘El Jefe’, he is still a regular fixture during team sessions at the Victory Capital Performance Center, often observing action after completing his daily physical rehabilitation workouts.
For Wembanyama, the upcoming championship series of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, represents the culmination of a lifelong obsession with basketball and a childhood ambition to capture the league’s ultimate prize. “Falling in love with basketball happened really early on in my life. I mean, I have pictures of myself with a basketball at an age where I wasn’t even old enough to have memories. And the Larry O’Brien, I don’t remember it. It really goes too far back. Basketball has really been there for so long for me. But I guess all kids love trophies and medals,” he said of his dream to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
The journey toward that dream resumes as Game 1 against the New York Knicks is set to be played at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center on Wednesday.
