The reconstruction of top-tier basketball in Rome is rapidly gathering pace, with a newly formed club targeting Sasha Djordjevic to spearhead its debut campaign, according to a report by La Gazzetta Dello Sport on Tuesday. The well-known tactician, a former EuroLeague champion as a player and LBA UnipolSai champion in 2021 as the head coach of Virtus Segafredo Bologna, is poised for yet another Italian return to lead this ambitious project.
Backed by former Dallas Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson, the organization has already initiated the legal transfer of Vanoli Cremona’s sporting title to the Italian capital. While the Italian Basketball Federation recently conditionally approved the club relocation for the next season, internal operations are moving swiftly behind the scenes.
The public unveiling of this long-term venture is expected over the next few days, with approvals across the board from Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic. As a vital minority shareholder, the global basketball icon is expected to travel from Slovenia to Rome for the introductory press conference, offering a massive stamp of international credibility to the expansion.
The Ljubljana native is currently in his home country, spending time with his daughters during the offseason. This break follows a demanding 2025-26 NBA Regular Season, which met a premature end due to injury.
Ultimately, his presence serves as an important link to the long-term vision of the club. The final goal remains positioning this franchise to capture a permanent slot in a new European league, widely referred to as NBA Europe.
