Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar is easily recognizable in numerous ways, but it’s almost impossible to look at him without immediately noticing the gigantic sword he has tattooed across his chest.

But it turns out that tattoo wasn’t actually planned.

While Lesnar admits that most of the ink on his body was by design and his choice, the sword on his chest happened after a drunken night at a bar led him to a tattoo shop where he got the work done. Truth be told, Lesnar says he doesn’t remember much of anything about that experience, but he received quite a shock when he woke up the next morning.

“I got that tattoo, I was shit-faced drunk in Scottsdale, Ariz.” Lesnar told the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast. “I was in Scottsdale, training for the NFL, had just gotten in a motorcycle accident. I was just kicked down hard. I was going through all that stuff.

“There was a tattoo shop across the street from the biker bar and that’s not a good place to have a tattoo shop. I got this tattoo, I didn’t even know I got the damn thing. I wake up the next day and I’m like what in the [hell] is this thing?”

Lesnar, who tried out for the Minnesota Vikings before eventually joining the UFC roster where he became heavyweight champion, blames no one but himself for that particular tattoo.

“No planning whatsoever,” Lesnar said. “It was half a gallon of vodka and maybe a few Vicodin.”

While he didn’t remember much about the entire experience, Lesnar definitely found meaning behind the tattoo, especially with what was happening in his life after he left the WWE and faced an uncertain future.

The result was getting that sword tattooed on his chest, and that image is now something he definitely won’t forget.

“The meaning behind it was, I felt like my back was against the wall and somebody had a sword, a knife stuck to my throat,” Lesnar explained. “Like what are you going to do now? I walked over there, and I said let’s put a big ass ugly sword on my chest.”
