EFL fans have slammed the “worst decision ever” after Alfie May was sent off for Huddersfield after pulling a rival’s hair.

The striker was dismissed in the first half after pulling back Luton‘s Kasey Palmer by his hair.

But fans were dismayed by the sending off as May appeared to attempt a shirt pull.

Many suggested the referee made a terrible decision, though Palmer looked aggrieved and gestured to imply his hair was tugged.

After May was shown red one fan said: “Quite possibly the worst refereeing decision I’ve seen in my 35 year existence.”

A third wrote: “Alfie May sent off for a ‘hair pull’. Games gone.”

And another commented: “That Alfie May red card is scandalous, he’s clearly trying to tug the shirt back to challenge for the ball, Palmers hair is down to his shoulders and he’s accidentally clipped the hair. Shocking red.”

Everton star Michael Keane was sent off in similar circumstances earlier this month for a hair pull on Tolu Arokodare.

The defender saw red following a VAR review and was subsequently banned for three matches.

Cristian Romero infamously avoided the same punishment after pulling Marc Cucurella‘s hair in 2023 – with referee Mike Dean admitting he was wrong not to brandish a red.

Luton failed to make their man advantage count as Huddersfield ran out 1-0 winners.

Captain Ryan Ledson scored from inside his own half to make it back-to-back wins for the Terriers.
