RUBEN AMORIM was ready to resign three days before he was sacked – which would have saved Manchester United a £12million pay off.
A high ranking Old Trafford source has revealed that the Portuguese was so dejected after a blazing row with director of football Jason Wilcox on the Friday before United played Leeds at Elland Road that he told friends he was resigning.
But it’s understood that he changed his mind after talking to his agent, Raul Costa, who insisted that the club should either back Amorim or sack him.
If he had resigned then it was likely that the Portuguese would have walked out without a penny in compensation.
Costa felt the end of a traumatic reign was in sight and if it was the club’s decision then they should pay up the rest of the former Sporting Lisbon manager’s contract.
Amorim was called into a meeting with Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada on Monday and promptly dismissed.

That meant Amorim receiving a hefty pay-off in the region of around £12m, adding to the compensation bill for managers sacked since Sir Alex Ferguson, which has now reached the £100m mark.
United have since appointed Michael Carrick as Amorim’s interim replacement.
Club legend and former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also interviewed but Carrick left a positive impression on club bosses.
Carrick has been at Carrington this week and will be thrust straight into a Manchester derby with rivals City on Saturday lunchtime.
And confidence levels are low after a couple of miserable results under stand-in boss Darren Fletcher.
United only managed a 2-2 draw at relegation-threatened Burnley in the Scotsman’s first game.
