Inter Miami’s first-ever MLS Cup triumph on Saturday afternoon was the culmination of the ‘Lionel Messi and friends’ project.

The project has been well-funded and ambitious in a way few MLS clubs could dream of, and that was on full display against the Vancouver Whitecaps as star power made the difference for Miami in the final.

But according to Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas, the MLS Cup win was only the start of their lavish ambitions.

The Miami native revealed that the club’s goal in 2026 is to defend their MLS Cup crown, and set their sights on winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup — a competition only one MLS side have ever won.

What’s more, there will be plenty of room in the squad for Mas and David Beckham to strengthen after Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets played their final professional matches Saturday afternoon.

“We already have (Busquets and Alba’s) replacements, not just in mind but also with verbal agreements,” he said. “We have the ability to add another Designated Player.”

No MLS team has defended their league title since the LA Galaxy in 2012, but you wouldn’t put it past this Miami team to flex their muscles once again, both on and off the pitch.
