Stanley Ketchel retained the world middleweight championship on July 31, 1908, knocking out top contender Hugo Kelly in the third round at the Coliseum in San Francisco. The sudden finish overshadowed two spirited rounds in which Kelly boxed well and forced the champion to work for the opening he wanted.

The Chicago contender entered the ring with an impressive reputation built on victories over Philadelphia Jack O’Brien, Mike Schreck and Joe Grim, plus draws against Tommy Ryan and Billy Papke. His speed, defense and ring intelligence made him one of the strongest challengers Ketchel faced during his title reign.

The early action justified that reputation. Ketchel marched forward in his usual attacking style, throwing heavy punches in search of an early knockout. Kelly answered with sharp counters, slipped many of the champion’s wider swings and scored to the head and body. A clean right hand near the end of the opening round briefly staggered Ketchel.

Kelly continued finding success in the second. He blocked punches, sidestepped Ketchel’s rushes and landed accurate left hands. Blood appeared around both fighters’ mouths, with Ketchel showing the heavier damage. The champion never eased off the pressure, continuing to look for one clean shot.

It came early in the third round. Kelly feinted and left his jaw exposed for an instant. Ketchel immediately fired a crushing left hook that landed flush on the chin. Kelly crashed to the canvas and failed to beat the referee’s count.

Ketchel later said he had been waiting for that exact opening from the opening bell. One mistake ended the fight. The knockout preserved his middleweight championship and added another memorable finish to one of boxing’s greatest single-year campaigns. Four months later, Ketchel regained the title from Billy Papke, becoming the first fighter of the gloved era to reclaim the world middleweight championship.
