Staging Joshua vs. Fury in New York Is a Massive Streaming Gamble

The strategy hinges on an ambitious corporate thesis: streaming platforms need live events that capture prime-time American viewership. By staging the event on a Friday night in Manhattan, Netflix can target prime-time viewers across North and South America while treating the British audience as a secondary consideration.

The strategy also carries obvious risk. A Friday night main event in New York would push the fight into the early hours of Saturday morning for viewers in Britain. Organizers are effectively betting that fans will adjust their schedules rather than reject a bout many expected to unfold at Wembley.

“It’s a bloody shame, quite frankly,” Simon Jordan said on talkSPORT. “I know that MSG is a legendary arena, but not for two British fighters in a generational fight that people want to see. But I guess he who pays the piper calls the tune.”

Jordan’s criticism goes beyond nostalgia. Joshua and Fury became global stars by filling arenas and stadiums across Britain, and Wembley always felt like the natural home for the fight. Passing up the prospect of a 90,000-seat crowd in favor of a 20,000-seat arena in Manhattan signals that global streaming economics now carry more influence than staging the event where demand has been strongest for years.

If Netflix succeeds, the move may reshape how boxing’s biggest events are scheduled for the streaming era. If British television audiences fall sharply because of the timing, executives may discover that maximizing global reach can come at the expense of the audience that made the fight possible in the first place.
