JJ Spaun produced a superb finish to claim the BMW PGA Championship on his Rolex Series debut at Wentworth Club.
The American carded a closing 67 to finish 17 under par and secure a two shot victory over England’s Aaron Rai, Australia’s Adam Scott, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Spain’s Manuel Elvira.
Spaun began the final round one shot behind overnight leader Elvira, but recovered from an early bogey at the first with birdies at the fourth and fifth.
He then went through a spell of eight consecutive pars before producing a decisive finish.
SPAUN MOVE
With a host of Major champions in contention, the 36 year old found another gear when it mattered most, making four birdies in his final five holes to move clear at the top of the leaderboard.
Elvira briefly joined Spaun at 17 under after an eagle at the 17th, but his hopes of a maiden professional victory disappeared at the last when he double bogeyed.
The Spaniard eventually signed for a closing 70 to finish at 15 under, alongside three time PGA Tour winner Scott and McIlroy, who both carded rounds of 68.
Rai produced the round of the day with an eight under 64 to climb into contention and also finish at 15 under.
SECOND DP TOUR WIN
The victory is Spaun’s second on the DP World Tour following his US Open triumph last year and adds his name to an illustrious list of BMW PGA Championship winners.
Arnold Palmer became the first American to win the title in 1975, while Billy Horschel won in 2021 and 2024.
Matt Fitzpatrick and Ryan Fox finished three shots behind Spaun at 14 under, alongside Joost Luiten and Filippo Celli.
There was also a memorable moment for Frederic Lacroix, who produced a hole in one at the 14th to win a BMW iX5 xDrive 60 M Sport.
The Frenchman’s ace added another highlight to a dramatic final day at Wentworth as Spaun held his nerve to secure one of the biggest titles of his career.
