Ryan Garcia intends to make Devin Haney and his team stew in the loss they have spent the past two years trying to discredit. A rematch may eventually happen, but Garcia isn’t interested in giving Haney another chance anytime soon.
Garcia named Teofimo Lopez, Rolando Romero, and Shakur Stevenson as fights he wants after facing Conor Benn on September 12 in Las Vegas. Haney can wait.
“I’m not in a rush to make that fight happen. They have to sit with that loss,” Ryan told The Ring. “Why do I have to beg for it? I’m here. I’m about to beat up Conor Benn. I want Teofimo Lopez, Rolando Romero and Shakur Stevenson. I have a lot of options. I’m not really worried about Haney now. If it happens, it happens.”
What happened in April 2024 remains the source of the hostility. Garcia dropped Haney three times and won a majority decision before the victory was changed to a no-contest following his positive test for ostarine.
Devin and Bill Haney have repeatedly brought up the failed test since then, refusing to treat the original outcome as a legitimate defeat. Drug testing has also been a recurring subject whenever another fight with Garcia has been discussed.
Ryan’s refusal to rush into a rematch sounds personal. He has the WBC welterweight title, a September fight with Benn, and several lucrative opponents he can pursue without giving Haney an opportunity to settle the score.
“All these guys obviously have to come to me,” Ryan said. “I’m definitely the lottery fight. If you want to be a huge name, I’m the guy to do it [against]. You have to get through me.”
That is the position Garcia believes he occupies. After two years of hearing why his performance against Haney shouldn’t count, he doesn’t seem interested in helping Team Haney put it behind them.
They can sit with it.
