A five-team NBA trade has been finalized, shaking up the league hierarchy and carrying major implications for key European players. At the epicenter of the deal revealed by ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania on Wednesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired athletic wing Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets on a four-year, $88 million contract, while also landing forward Cam Whitmore from the Washington Wizards.
In a series of interconnected moves, Cleveland sent guard Tre Mann, cash, and a second-round pick in 2027, which was initially obtained from the Los Angeles Clippers, to Washington, rerouted Max Strus to Los Angeles, and previously traded German playmaker Dennis Schroder alongside cash to the Charlotte Hornets. To round out the mega-deal, Denver secured Cleveland’s unprotected first-round pick in 2031, a Sacramento Kings second-rounder in 2032, and Julian Reese from Washington, whom they plan to waive off his two-way contract.
This complex asset reshuffling directly transforms the supporting cast around Denver’s Serbian superstar Nikola Jokic. After losing Watson’s career-high 14.6 points per game and outstanding perimeter defense, the Joker will shoulder an even heavier burden as the front office retools its championship-caliber rotation around their dominant center. Meanwhile, the Cavs bolster their depth by pairing Watson with Croatia’s Mario Hezonja.
As the Clippers absorb Strus’s hefty contract via a trade exception, tight salary cap restrictions will influence their bench construction. This squeeze creates an opportunity for Swiss big Yanic Konan Niederhauser and Spanish forward Baba Miller to secure reliable rotational roles.
