Mikey Garcia gives Rolando “Rolly” Romero a strong chance of beating Teofimo Lopez on Saturday night because the sharper version of Lopez has been missing from his recent performances.

Peak form carried Teofimo past Vasiliy Lomachenko at lightweight and Josh Taylor at light welterweight. His footwork, accuracy, and combination punching have not looked as sharp in recent outings. Moving to welterweight will not automatically restore those qualities.

Career success and larger paydays may have reduced the hunger that drove Teofimo earlier. Fighters can lose part of their intensity after accomplishing their biggest goals, especially when moving up removes the strain of making a lower weight.

“I think Rolly has a much better chance than people think. I’ve seen a lot of people say Teofimo, but they think Teofimo back at 135, the Teofimo of the early 140s,” said Mikey to Fight Hub TV. “Lately, Teofimo hasn’t really shown me that earlier Teofimo when he fought Lomachenko, when he fought Josh Taylor. Maybe his dedication, maybe there are other things around that have distracted him. Maybe his hunger is not there as much as it was before.”

Greater discipline has also strengthened Romero’s chances. Against Ryan Garcia, he boxed patiently instead of rushing forward in search of one knockout blow. Romero scored a knockdown but maintained his composure rather than exposing himself with a reckless follow-up attack.

Patience gives Rolly a realistic tactical route. Teofimo has struggled when opponents refuse to lead and deny him easy counterpunching opportunities. If Romero avoids forcing exchanges, Lopez may spend long stretches waiting instead of producing enough offense to control the rounds.

Recent performances have pushed Mikey slightly toward Romero in a matchup he considers close. The earlier version of Teofimo would have received Garcia’s backing, but he no longer expects that fighter to turn up.

Technical ability still favors Lopez, but isolated counterpunches may not be enough. Waiting too long for perfect openings would allow Romero to outwork him and take the decision.
