Robert Garcia believes Jaron “Boots” Ennis will use world-title unifications to avoid Vergil Ortiz Jr., but Ortiz’s lack of a championship belt is the main reason the fight remains out of reach.

Ennis is building his position at junior middleweight by targeting champions. Ortiz Jr. offers a bigger fight than several titleholders, but beating him would not move Ennis closer to becoming undisputed. Josh Kelly offers Ennis another championship and direct progress toward controlling the division.

Vergil Jr. lost valuable time during his promotional dispute. While his career was stalled, Ennis remained active and surpassed him. Ortiz Jr. was unavailable when the rivalry needed to develop, and Ennis has no obligation to reorganize his career around a dangerous opponent who does not own a title.

Robert insists Ortiz Jr. is prepared to face Ennis immediately and has already instructed Golden Boy to pursue the bout.

“We’re available November. Let’s do it. If you beat Vergil, then go after the unifications and undisputed. In the meantime, show the world that you are better than Vergil. He won’t do it. They’re going after Kelly,” Garcia said on the Mr. Versace Podcast.

Garcia’s challenge works as a public relations maneuver. Ortiz Jr. needs Ennis far more than Ennis needs him. Calling the championship campaign an avoidance strategy is a way to convince fans that Ennis owes Ortiz Jr. a fight before pursuing the remaining belts.

The reality is that Ortiz Jr. must capture a title at 154 pounds or secure a mandatory position. Without that leverage, he is asking Ennis to interrupt a four-belt campaign for a dangerous fight that offers no championship reward.

Vergil Jr. has the style to give Ennis a grueling night. His pressure, body punching and willingness to trade inside would test the defensive openings Xander Zayas exposed. Robert believes Ortiz would finish Ennis after hurting him, but the level of danger does not determine Ennis’s priorities.

Ortiz Jr. is active again, but he must recover the position he lost during his absence. Moving to middleweight would permanently close the door on this fight. Capturing a world title at 154 pounds is the clearest way to give Ennis a reason to face him.
