Marco Romero needed less than three minutes to show why he was one of the best young talents on Saturday night’s preliminary card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The 20-year-old middleweight overwhelmed Kahlil Mitchell and forced a stoppage at 2:33 of the opening round. Romero attacked with speed, power and little wasted movement, leaving Mitchell trapped behind his gloves before the referee stepped between them.
Mitchell never had an opportunity to settle into the scheduled eight-round fight. Romero closed the distance quickly, landed clean punches and continued firing combinations once he had his opponent near the ropes. The pressure became too much for Mitchell before the first round ended.
“I’m not getting paid for overtime,” Romero said after the fight.
That line matched the performance. Romero did not rush forward, throwing wild punches in search of an early finish. His shots were short and accurate, and he remained balanced while attacking. Those qualities separate him from young punchers who rely almost entirely on physical strength.
The Kansas prospect is now 15-0 with 13 knockouts. Although Mitchell was not a major test, Romero handled him exactly as a highly regarded prospect should. There was no prolonged feeling-out period and no opportunity for the underdog to gain confidence.
Romero recently signed with Premier Boxing Champions, giving the company another young middleweight with the potential to move quickly. His power will attract attention, but his composure is just as important. He fights like someone who already understands how to create openings rather than waiting for an opponent to make an obvious mistake.
Stronger opposition will be needed before Romero can be judged against the leading fighters at 160 pounds. Saturday’s performance still provided an impressive introduction for viewers watching him for the first time.
Mitchell came to Las Vegas with six professional wins and four knockouts. Romero made that experience look insignificant, finishing him before the fight had a chance to develop.
