Larry Holmes reached 48-0 before dropping a close decision to Michael Spinks in 1985. Holmes had already made 20 successful heavyweight title defenses, yet much of the conversation focused on his failure to equal Marciano. That reduced an extraordinary championship reign to a comparison with a fighter from a different era.

Joe Calzaghe also retired without a loss, closing his career against Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. Hopkins remained a dangerous opponent who later captured another world title, while Jones was well removed from his prime. Calzaghe’s damaged hands and long championship run gave him good reason to leave without hunting for an arbitrary milestone.

Recordkeeping complicated Dariusz Michalczewski’s attempt to reach Marciano’s total. His second victory over Richard Hall was initially treated as his 49th, but an earlier win over Graciano Rocchigiani had been changed to a no contest. Michalczewski later lost to Julio Cesar Gonzalez and Fabrice Tiozzo, showing how easily the comparison could hinge on paperwork.

Floyd Mayweather officially passed Marciano by stopping Conor McGregor in 2017. The event generated enormous money, but McGregor was making his professional boxing debut. Mayweather finished at 50-0, although the final victory lacked the sporting credibility that the number implied.

Mayweather’s disputed decisions against Jose Luis Castillo and Marcos Maidana also demonstrate how fragile a perfect record can be. He granted both men rematches and won more decisively the second time, preventing either controversy from defining his career.

Terence Crawford faces no reason to chase Marciano after his decisive victory over Canelo Alvarez. Crawford has captured championships across multiple divisions and already completed one of the finest careers of his generation. Reaching 49 would require several more fights late in his career, possibly against younger opponents such as Jaron Ennis.

Why risk everything for a number that would reveal little about Crawford’s greatness? Holmes’ title defenses, Calzaghe’s longevity, Mayweather’s defensive mastery and Crawford’s movement through the divisions carry far more historical value than reaching an arbitrary total.
