Jacob Bank objected when the WBO put Zhanibek Alimkhanuly at the front of its super middleweight rankings after a doping suspension. Now the sanctioning body has ordered Bank to fight him for its vacant title. The Danish contender has the opportunity he sought, and a formidable opponent stands in the way.
WBO president Gustavo Olivieri announced on X that the sides have 15 days to reach an agreement before purse bid proceedings are ordered. The formal negotiation order is still to be published.
Bank argued that Alimkhanuly’s quick return to the title picture was unfair to contenders who had worked their way up the rankings. Fighting him does not erase that objection. It does give Bank the chance to make his case with a victory.
There is a bigger prize for Danish boxing, too. Bank has built his following in Kolding, but a world title win would give that audience a champion to rally around and could bring a major fight to Denmark. The jump in opposition is steep: Bank has yet to face anyone with Alimkhanuly’s championship experience or southpaw skill.
Alimkhanuly also has something to prove. He held a title at 160 pounds, but this would test his power and movement against a naturally bigger, active super middleweight. If Bank can take the early counters, keep pressing and work Alimkhanuly’s body along the ropes, he may find out how comfortable the Kazakh fighter is over twelve rounds at 168. Walking straight in behind a high guard, though, gives Alimkhanuly the left hand and uppercut he wants.
Diego Pacheco’s absence remains the other question. He is ranked No. 2, above No. 3 Bank, and is lined up to face Darius Fulghum on November 14. Olivieri called Bank the “first AVAILABLE contender,” but the WBO has not said why Pacheco was unavailable. His scheduled fight makes a business calculation plausible; it does not establish that he declined this particular title opportunity.
If negotiations fail, a purse bid will help settle where Bank gets his chance. For now, the venue and broadcaster are open. The stakes are already clear: Bank can answer his complaint about the WBO by beating the fighter whose place in line he challenged.
