Former WWE talent Rob Conway is best recalled for his run alongside Sylvain Grenier as La Résistance, as well as his later “Conway’s Law” singles run. At the time of his WWE tenure, Conway definitely had the look Vince McMahon was looking for, and according to him, McMahon had exceptionally high praise of him.
During an interview on “INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet,” Conway claimed that McMahon pulled him and Grenier aside one night during their La Résistance run, when he shared what he saw in him.
“He said, ‘Rob, I consider you to just be one tier below Bret Hart as a worker,'” Conway recalled. “He said: ‘But you have a gimmick. You need to not worry about having such good matches. You gotta work the gimmick.'”
Conway claimed that McMahon would never wish them a good match before the time, and simply urge them to wave their flags because he believed it was an important aspect of their gimmicks. Following this, Conway expressed that they finally figured out how to work their characters, realizing that they weren’t there to have five-star matches but to generate heat.
“And so, whenever I became a singles wrestler, I already knew that Vince liked my in-ring ability,” he claimed, adding that he worked on his physique too, and drastically changed his look.
“One time I did a promo, and it went really good, and once I got it done and he goes: ‘You need to do it again; you need more oil,'” Conway recalled. “I was never promised anything, but I felt like… Where I was going at the beginning was towards the Intercontinental Championship; that’s kinda the stepping stone to being like a main event.”
