Diamond Dallas Page may be a WWE Hall of Famer, but is more because of his successful WCW run, where he was a multi-time World Heavyweight Champion, than his tenure in WWE. Brought in during the onset of the Invasion angle, DDP’s run there was considered a disappointment by many, including himself. And it didn’t have to be that way, as DDP revealed during an appearance on “The Major Wrestling Figure Podcast” that he had aspirations about facing The Rock, playing off the fact that both referred to themselves as “The People’s Champion.” Vince McMahon, however, had other ideas.
“When you’re trying to make Vince McMahon feel like you want to be a team player, you give up yourself and you give him yourself and you give him yourself,” DDP said. “So I let it go. And I let them set me up on an angle that was never going to work.”
DDP was referring to the now infamous angle that saw him debut in WWE by stalking The Undertaker’s wife, leading to a feud between the two that Undertaker would win decisively. The former WCW questioned his character’s motivations of using Undertaker to become famous, despite DDP already being a well known name, and him being presented as a coward multiple times. In the end, DDP believes the storyline’s failure was a key reason as to why WCW fans ultimately had no interest in sticking around during the Invasion angle.
“I decided to go in on it and just play the role,” DDP said. “And man, it just…it p****d off so many WCW fans and they stopped watching wrestling. They just stopped watching.”
