Charlotte Flair has spoken glowingly about a fellow WWE star and the match they had over a decade ago, which she believes was a turning point in her career.
Flair, who has had a legendary career and played a huge role in changing women’s wrestling, graduated and learned the ropes in “WWE NXT.” During her time on the developmental brand, she had one of her greatest matches against Natalya at NXT TakeOver 2014, which she believes helped shape the career she has today.
“[That match was] Everything. If that match hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here today,” stated Flair in an interview with “Busted Open.” “Like, yes, were they going with me? [Yes] But I don’t know if it was more like, ‘Okay, she’s easily the brand for whatever we need. Flair’s kid, we’re bringing in Ric, we’re bringing in Bret [Hart].’ But, like, in that moment, if you go back and watch that match, no one like gave a sh*t about my dad and Bret, and it was like so raw, so authentic. It was the longest match that had ever been televised or produced in WWE up until that time. And like I go back and watch that match, and I still think like out of a lot of my matches to this day, that one still is timeless and a classic.”
“The Queen” reiterated the importance of that clash against Natalya, and also named it as one of the career-defining matches of her career, alongside her match against Asuka at WrestleMania 34.
“But had that match not happened, I don’t think people would have taken me serious. I don’t think it would have given — it launched everything. Like, you know, when you have defining moments? I’d say that was a defining moment, and I would say the Asuka match was a defining moment. [WrestleMania] 32 [against Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks] was great, but I feel like those two were really [pivotal moments],” she added.
Flair was eventually brought up to WWE’s main roster the following year, marking the beginning of a phenomenal run.
