Instead of retaliating against his bitter enemy at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event, Cody Rhodes chose mercy, something that ultimately cost him his match. Still, according to WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray, there may be hope for Rhodes’ on-screen character going forward.
Ahead of tonight’s episode of “WWE SmackDown,” Ray laid out his preferred course of action for Rhodes in the aftermath of his SNME loss, which came at the hands of his former mentor Randy Orton. “Cody Rhodes should go so off the deep end that [General Manager] Nick Aldis is forced to do something about it,” Ray said on “Busted Open Radio.” “The creative or one of the big brains involved in the story, whether it’s Cody or whoever, need to come up with something that has not been done before, something that shows that this guy has snapped, if they’re going to go in that direction. Something that is so bad that despite the fact that everybody in the world knows that Randy Orton deserves a receipt, that people even say, ‘No, Cody, this is even too much,’ and then go farther than that.”
As an example of an act considered to be “too much,” Ray referenced the time he and D-Von Dudley broke the neck of Tommy Dreamer’s future wife Beulah McGillicutty, via a 3D, as Dreamer watched on helplessly. “Go too far. Do something! Show me how enraged you are. Show me that you’re not just going to sit there and take it like a good little babyface,” Ray encouraged Rhodes.
Following Sunday Night’s Main Event, the 2026 Orton-Rhodes feud is on an even plane, with both men boasting a victory over the other. Rhodes previously defeated Orton at WrestleMania 42, but not without leaving with a punt to the head and a gnarly eye wound.
